Photo shoot at BMC Service Course in Santa Rosa, CA for Bike Monkey Magazine. BMC Racing Team is home to Cadel Evans who won last years Tour De France. Cycling in Sonoma County runs deep and reaches across continents!
Just 4 more weeks till the start of the 2012 Amgen Tour of California. The Santa Rosa 2012 Committee has put together a brochure that contains all the info you need to enjoy the weekend in Santa Rosa as the TOC kicks off Stage 1 in Downtown Santa Rosa. The cover photo was from my shoot earlier this year with Levi Leipheimer, 3 time winner of the TOC.
I has been a few years since I have been able to successfully shoot the moon! Conditions have to just right with clear cool weather and of course all on a night with a full moon. Photography is as much about patience, being in the right place at the right time as having good equipment and solid technique.
Its great to see that cycling in Sonoma County has impacted the mainstream media and advertisers see the value that cycling brings to our community. This was a photo of Levi Leipheimer, the #1 Professional US Cyclist I took back in February for use in promoting the upcoming Amgen Tour of California Stage 1. The photo was taken during one of Levi’s training rides in Sonoma County, CA. I was given a 20 minute window to get a variety of shots and fortunately for me, Levi is a true professional making my job easier.
Just got Issue 16 of Cyclocross Magazine with 2 of my photos from the Santa Rosa Cup CX Race #2 published in the “Cross Eyed” section. It’s great to see the sport of cycling grow in Sonoma County. Can’t wait til fall to see what Bike Monkey and CX Nation have up their sleeves.
Couple of shots from the seaside town of Oceanside CA.
These two photographs were taken in Bakersfield CA after a cold late winter storm passed through just before sunset. These two images show the diversity of Bakersfield’s economy – oil production and agriculture. The Orange Grove RV Resort was once part of large orange grove and the grove still remains between RV sites where visitors can pick fresh oranges during a stop over at this transportation hub. In the second photo an oil derrick sits idle, surrounded by grape vines.
Here are some of my favorites over the last few years of taking a stab at the local cycling scene! I love event photography!!!!
I had a quick shoot with Levi Leipheimer professional cyclist to get some images to promote the 1st stage of this years Amgen Tour of California which kicks off in Santa Rosa, California on May 13th. Bike Monkey is the lead in promoting the Santa Rosa stage this year and needed some images of Levi in his new team kit for their campaign.
For the last several years my family has made a New Years Eve tradition of visiting the harbor seals at the mouth of the Russian River. Each year the winter weather has it’s way with the beach. Last year with record rain, the river split the beach in two leaving the seals on the North side isolated from pesky humans. This year with almost no rain this season the seals were hauled out on the South side of the river channel but twelve foot winter swells crashing on the remnants of an old jetty kept the humans a safe distance away. Besides the Harbor seals, a couple of Brown Pelicans (Pelecanus occidentalis) were hanging out with the seagulls. The Brown Pelicans were once endangered due to DDT in the 1970’s but thanks to the ban on DDT, they now number over 650,000!
Cyclocross or CX racing as it is known came back to Sonoma County in a big way this fall with two races put on by CX Nation and Bike Monkey. Here are a few of my favorite shots from the day.
This is a video of images shot through out the year at the Rosati Family Winery. The idea behind the project was to tell a visual story of vineyard life over the course of a year. The video starts with a time lapse sequence of over 2,000 still images of sunrise over the timespan of 1hr played back in 60 seconds. Over 100 hours went into capturing the images through out the year and compiling them into this 10 minute video. The results, a labor of love.
Hawaiian Lizard Fish, Synodus binotatus aka Two Spot Lizard Fish.
Underwater photography is extremely challenging. For this photo I was swimming between reefs at a dive site called “Marty’s Reef” off the coast of Maui when I spotted two Lizard Fish hanging out on the rubble bottom. To photograph fish you have to look well in advance for subjects. Once you spot your subject, pre-planning is key! All of my underwater photos are shot in Manual mode, where I control the exposure settings along with the flash output. I use two underwater flashes or strobes and carefully aim them to provide natural looking light. Once the camera and strobes are set for my initial shot, I maneuver in slowly and settle into position, being careful not to disturb the seafloor sediment that could ruin my shot. I must also control my breathing to maintain neutral buoyancy all the while, inching my way closer. I start shooting and continue working my subject until I have the shot that I like. Sometimes I only get one chance and other times with a more cooperative subject, I can stay and shoot till my air time is up and I must return to the surface. Special thanks to Ed Robinson’s Diving Adventures, Maui HI.
